Measurements [American]
- 580 g flour
- 4 tsp baking powder
- 240 mL lard (we use crisco)
- 200 g sugar
- 60 mL whole milk
- 2 tsp vanilla
- 3 whole eggs
- 3 egg yolks
- Either:
- chopped walnuts
- grated coconut
Preheat oven to 190 degrees C. Sift dry ingredients together, cut crisco into flour mixture (mixture should be crumbly). Make a well in the flour mixture and add the eggs, vanilla and milk. Mix by hand mixture will be sticky, put a little flour in your hands and roll into balls or open figure eight twists. Bake for 10-12 minutes. Frost with a simple white frosting (color for the holidays) while frosting is wet dip cookin in chopped walnuts or coconut.
Recipe yeilds about 3 dozen cookies depending on how big you roll the ball or make the twist.
I'm third generation Italian, My Mother gave this recipe to me. My Grandmother brought it with her from Calabria, Italy. This cookie is a holiday must in our house.
