Oddities
Not everything I've inherited is inspirational or a tool that led to the person I am today or a clue to my parents' and grandparents' inner lives. Some of it's just odd.
- Half a dozen curling irons;
- Enough zipper bags, foil and plastic wrap to not have bought any in five months;
- Hundreds of Benedryl in a bottle rather than some idiot blister pack;
- Two copies of Winston Churchill's six-book series on the World War II, one hardback, one paperback;
- Broken Easter decorations Mom clearly intended to glue back together that are now sitting on my kitchen counter;
- A cutting board so well-used light shines through, and a knife sharpened so often half the blade is gone;
- Two large, old bottles of red vermouth;
- A letter opener made by my grandmother's step-brother from melted copper shell casings.
The recipe: Hazelnut torte
In recent years, as the hosting of the Christmas party has passed on to my cousins, someone tried a hazelnut roll instead of the usual torte. There was no comparison.
The craft: 3-D Christmas tree card
Pop-up cards are easier than you think.
